Solar Panel Removal and Reinstall for Roof Replacement

When the roof under an existing array needs replacing, the panels have to come off, be stored somewhere safe, and go back up once the roofers are finished. It is straightforward work in itself, and it is also entirely avoidable expense, which is exactly why the age of the roof covering is the first thing anyone should look at before putting solar on a house in the first place.

The complication is coordination. Two separate trades, two separate schedules, and a roof that sits open in between them. Sequencing matters, weather matters, and the question of who carries responsibility if something goes wrong at the seam between the two jobs should be settled in writing before either crew arrives, rather than negotiated afterward while your roof is sitting exposed.

What removal and reinstall actually involves

  • Shutdown and safe disconnect. The array is electrically de-energized and disconnected properly before anything comes off the roof. This is electrical work rather than roofing work, and it belongs to the solar crew.
  • Panel and racking removal. Modules, racking, and attachment hardware all come off. Existing penetrations get documented so the roofer knows where they are and the reinstall does not have to guess later.
  • Protected on-site storage. Panels have to go somewhere protected while the roof is replaced. Ask where, for how long, and who carries liability if a module is damaged while it is off the roof.
  • Coordination with the roofing crew. Somebody has to own the schedule so the roof is not open longer than necessary and the solar crew is not standing on a deck that is not ready. Confirm who that somebody is.
  • New flashing and new penetrations. Panels go back onto a new roof with new mounting hardware and properly flashed penetrations. Reusing old flashing on a new roof is a shortcut worth asking about directly and specifically.
  • Recommissioning and production check. The system is reconnected, restarted, and verified to be producing and reporting again. Do not consider the job finished at the moment the last module is bolted down.

How the two jobs get sequenced

  1. Settle the roofing plan first. Know what roofing material is going on and what the roofer needs from the deck before scheduling panel removal. The roofing scope drives the calendar and the solar work fits around it.
  2. Schedule removal close to the roofing start. Panels should come off shortly before the roofers begin, not weeks ahead. Every extra day the array is down is a day the system produces nothing at all for you.
  3. Put liability in writing. Get it in writing who is responsible for the panels in storage, for the new penetrations, and for any leak that appears afterward. This is the step homeowners skip and later regret.
  4. Reinstall, recommission, verify. Once the roof is finished the array goes back up on new hardware, is reconnected, and is confirmed producing and reporting. Keep that documentation with your roofing warranty paperwork.

What drives the cost

The price of this work tracks labor and complexity rather than any published rate. What moves it is the number of modules; the pitch and height of the roof and what access precautions those require; whether the racking and attachment hardware can be reused or has to be replaced; how long the panels have to be stored; whether the electrical scope is a simple reconnection or something more involved; and whether one company handles both trades or two are being coordinated. Ask specifically whether the reinstall includes new flashing and new penetrations, because that single answer changes the number.

Questions people ask

Can the roofers just do it themselves?

Some roofing companies will remove panels. The disconnect and the reconnection are electrical work with warranty implications, so ask specifically who performs that portion and whether they are licensed for it. If the answer comes back vague, that vagueness is your answer.

Will removing panels void my warranty?

It can, depending on the terms and on who does the work. Read your workmanship warranty before scheduling anything, and if the original installer is still operating, ask them first. Letting an unauthorized crew handle the array is a common way to lose coverage you already paid for.

How long will my system be off?

For the length of the roofing job plus the removal and reinstall days on either end. That is production you do not get back, which is one more reason to sequence the two jobs tightly instead of leaving the array down while a schedule drifts.

Can I avoid this job entirely?

Only by dealing with the roof first. If your roof covering is near the end of its life, replacing it before installing solar removes this job from your future completely. That one sequencing decision is the most valuable thing on this page.
