Homeowners often find out months later, either from a bill that stopped behaving or from finally opening the monitoring app. If something feels off, the useful first move is not to guess at causes but to get somebody who works on arrays to look at what the equipment is reporting.

What service calls usually involve

  • Diagnosing lost production — Establishing whether output actually dropped or whether the season, the weather, or new shade explains it, before anyone starts replacing hardware that may be working correctly.
  • Inverter faults — Fault codes, shutdowns, and equipment that will not restart. This is where a lot of service calls land, and the fix ranges from a reset to a replacement conversation.
  • Monitoring gone dark — Sometimes the array is fine and only the reporting link failed, which is worth confirming first. Losing visibility is also how a real problem goes unnoticed for months.
  • Wiring and connections — Connectors, conduit, and grounding degrade or get disturbed over time, including by weather and by other trades working on the roof. These faults are often intermittent and need someone on site.
  • Pests and debris — Birds and rodents nest under arrays, chew wiring, and leave a mess that traps moisture. Screening the array perimeter is a common remedy and a common thing installers skipped.
  • Leaks at the mounts — If water is showing up in the attic or on a ceiling near the array, the mounting and flashing need inspection. This one usually involves both a roofer and a solar crew.

How a service call goes

  1. Describe what changed — What you noticed, when it started, whether the monitoring shows anything, and whether anything happened around the same time such as roof work, storms, or an electrical change in the house.
  2. Check the easy things — Monitoring connectivity, breakers, and any error displayed on the inverter are worth confirming before a truck rolls, and a service tech will ask about them anyway.
  3. On-site diagnosis — Somebody tests at the equipment rather than guessing from the app, isolates whether the issue is the inverter, the wiring, the array itself, or something outside the system entirely.
  4. Repair options in writing — Ask for what is wrong, what it takes to fix, and what happens if you defer it. If a full replacement is being recommended, ask what evidence rules out a repair.

What it costs

Service pricing depends on what is wrong, and nobody can tell you that before looking. Most companies charge for the diagnostic visit, and it is fair to ask up front what that costs and whether it applies toward the repair. After that the drivers are ordinary: whether the fix is a connection or a component, whether the failing part is still available, how the array sits on the roof and how hard it is to reach safely, and whether roofing work is involved because the problem is at a mount. If the original installer is gone, ask whether manufacturer coverage still applies and who would file it.

My installer went out of business. Who fixes my system?

Another installer that takes service work, which is a smaller group than the list of companies that sell new installs, but it exists. Gather whatever documentation you still have: the equipment list, permits, and monitoring logins. Any manufacturer coverage on the hardware may still be alive even though the installer is not, and a service company can help you find out.

How do I know my system is underperforming?

Compare against itself rather than against a headline number. Look at the same month in previous years, since seasons and weather swing output significantly. New shade from a growing tree, a dirty or partly covered array, and a single failed component all look different in the data. If you cannot see the data, restoring monitoring is the first repair.

Will a repair void anything?

That depends on the documents you signed and on the manufacturer terms for your specific equipment, which is genuinely something we cannot answer for you. Pull the paperwork before authorizing work, ask the service company directly whether their repair affects any existing coverage, and get their answer in writing rather than as a verbal assurance.

Is an older system worth repairing?

Usually the question is repair cost against remaining useful life and how the rest of the equipment is holding up. Get the diagnosis first, because homeowners are sometimes steered toward full replacement when a component fix would do. If replacement is recommended, ask what specifically rules out repairing what is already there.
