A battery does two things. It keeps chosen circuits alive when the grid goes down, and it lets you use your own production later in the day instead of exporting it. Both are useful, and both are separate from the question of whether a battery lowers your bill. It is worth deciding which problem you are actually solving before storage quietly lands in a quote as a line item.
Storage can be paired with a new system, added to an array you already own, or installed on its own. The design questions change in each case. What stays constant is that a battery is sized around what you want running during an outage and for how long, and that whole-home backup and a handful of essential circuits are very different scopes with very different equipment behind them.
There is no useful price to publish here either. What moves it is how much capacity you need, which follows directly from the loads you want backed up and how long you want them running; whether you are backing up the whole house or a critical-loads subpanel; whether the battery is paired with a new array or retrofitted onto an existing one; the condition of your electrical service and whether it needs upgrading; and whether the project is owned outright, financed, or wrapped into a third-party agreement. Every one of those is a design decision you can influence before a number is quoted.
That is the wrong first question. A battery's clearest benefits are outage coverage and using your own production later in the day. Whether it changes your bill depends entirely on how your utility credits exported power and bills you for consumption, which is a question to put to your utility, in writing, before you buy.
Often yes, but not always simply. Depending on how the existing system was built, adding storage can require new equipment between the array and the battery. Ask what gets replaced, what that does to the existing warranty, and who is responsible if something on the older equipment fails afterward.
No. A grid-tied system without storage is a complete, working design and remains the common one. Storage is an addition that solves outages and self-consumption. Treat it as a separate decision that has to justify itself, rather than a line item that arrives pre-attached to a solar quote.
The battery carries the loads you designed for until it is depleted, then recharges from your array when the sun is up, if the system is configured to do that. Ask specifically whether your design supports recharging while the grid is down, because not every configuration does.
