A grid-tied rooftop system is a construction project attached to your house and a long-term relationship with your utility. The part that deserves your attention is the design. Sizing comes out of twelve months of actual usage, and the layout comes out of which roof planes you have, how they are oriented, how steep they are, and what shades them through the day. Two proposals for the same house can differ substantially, and the only way to see why is to make both installers put their equipment list, production assumptions, and warranty terms in writing.
We do not publish prices, because a price with no roof and no usage attached to it is fiction. What moves the number is how much system your past usage actually calls for; roof complexity, pitch, and how many separate planes the array has to be split across; the condition of your electrical service and whether it needs upgrading; whether storage is included; and how the purchase is structured, since owning outright, financing, leasing, and a power purchase agreement are different products with different long-term consequences. Ask each installer to break their number into those pieces, and compare the pieces rather than the totals.
Longer than the installation itself. The physical work on most homes is short. Permitting with your city or county and interconnection approval from your utility are what set the calendar, and neither is under your installer's control. Ask for a realistic range at proposal time, and ask what happens to your pricing if the timeline slips.
If the roof covering is near the end of its life, yes, and it is not a close call. Panels have to come off and go back on to reroof underneath, which is real cost you can avoid entirely by sequencing the two jobs correctly. Get an independent read on remaining roof life before you sign a solar contract.
That comes out of your bills, not out of a conversation. Twelve months of usage shows the seasonal shape of your consumption, and the design gets built against that shape. Be skeptical of any sizing that arrives before someone has looked at a full year of your actual data.
It should separate equipment warranties from the workmanship warranty from any production guarantee, state the term of each, and name who honors it. Then ask what happens if the installing company is no longer in business, because that scenario is quietly what the whole warranty section is about.
